ORIGINAL 1851 GLEASON’S PICTORIAL: FUGITIVE SLAVE SIMMS BOSTON ABOLITIONIST RIOT
The first two issues of Gleason’s, the first large format weekly pictorial newspaper, features extensive coverage of the first trial under the newly enacted Fugitive Slave Law. A mob of abolitionists tried to free Simms from custody resulting in the siege of the Federal courthouse in Boston.
