A Kalendar for Pennsylvania 1915 by Barr Ferree [From the Year Book of The Pennsylvania Society for 1916] New York: The Pennsylvania Society 1916 First Edition Inscribed on the top wrap by William Williams Keen, M.D. (1837–1932). Octavo, 23 pages, publisher's original wraps. Some minor wear and discoloration, else in very good condition. William Williams Keen, M.D. (1837–1932), was a pioneering American surgeon known for his significant contributions to neurosurgery and medical education. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from Brown University in 1859 and Jefferson Medical College in 1862. Keen served as a surgeon during the Civil War, gaining valuable experience in treating injuries. After the war, he became a leading figure in American surgery, notably performing one of the first successful brain tumor removals in 1887 and pioneering aseptic surgical techniques. Keen held academic positions at Jefferson Medical College and the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, authored numerous influential texts including the "American Textbook of Surgery," and served as president of the American Surgical Association and the American Medical Association. His work extended to public health and medical research advocacy. Keen's long career, which lasted until his death at 95, left a lasting legacy on modern surgical practices and medical education.
