Laneham's Letter Describing the Magnificent Pageants presented before Queen Elizabeth, at Kenilworth Castle in 1575, repeatedly referred to in the Romance of Kenilworth, with an introductory preface, glossarial and explanatory notes. Published in London, England by J.H. Burn in 1821. Hardcover, 114 pages. This copy was rebound in green boards by John Smith & Son, Bookbinders, in Glasgow. This copy was inscribed by the publisher. The inscription from the original copy has been attached to the front free endpaper. It reads: "To Richard Thompson, Esq. with the Publisher's sincere respects." Presumably, that was written by J.H. Burn himself. Condition is very nice. The spine has faded but the cover is physically in fine condition. Inside the front cover is a very small (about 5/8" x 1") ex libris sticker for J.L. Weir. Also inside the front cover is a label showing that the book was rebound by John Smith & Son. The interior pages are bright with virtually no foxing. There are small notations on pages 48, 50, 96-97, 114, and possibly elsewhere that appear to correct the text. Were they added by Mr. Burn before he gave the copy to Mr. Thompson? The Laneham (or Langham) letter, published by 1580, is a significant source for the entertainments of the Elizabethan period in England. Dated from Worcester on 20 August 1575, and titled A letter: whearin, part of the entertainment vntoo the Queenz Maiesty, at Killingwoorth Castl, in Warwik Sheer in this soomerz progress 1575. iz signified: from a freend officer attendant in the coourt, vntoo hiz freend a citizen, and merchaunt of London, it describes the summer 1575 entertainment of Elizabeth I of England by Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, at Kenilworth Castle. The letter is a significant source of our knowledge concerning entertainments during the Elizabethan era. Sir Walter Scott quoted from the Laneham letter in his novel Kenilworth (1821), leading to the Letter's republication in London the same year, in this very edition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
